Even if you’ve been living under a rock you know that rapper Azealia Banks has been feuding with Iggy Azalea. Banks, who calls Azalea “Igloo Australia”, claims fellow rapper Azalea is talentless and has only come this far because she’s white and has had more opportunities.
First things first, I don’t care who you are and what you think, you don’t slam another woman in your same industry. Yes, I understand it’s not as common for black females to ‘make it’. And yes, I understand you’re upset that Iggy has had hit after hit. But what I cannot get behind, and what I simply just cannot wrap my head around, is seeing Azealia completely trash a fellow female.
If Banks wants to talk about politics in the black community, there are better ways to address the issue. No one is going to feel sorry for you when you’re talking shit and playing martyr. Why should I respect someone who puts others down to make themselves look better? I won’t. I can’t. I refuse. Playing the victim and being mean does not make you the “cool” girl, nor does it make anyone feel bad for you.
Where is Banks’ PR team? Who thought this was a good idea?
Here’s the thing, I get where Azealia Banks is coming from. I get some of the points she is trying to make. It’s hard to make it in the industry, and black women do have it harder. What Banks did wrong was address the problem by blaming people like Iggy, when she could have easily gone on the same radio show and talked about these issues in a calm manner and without bashing anyone. Speak about the issue(s) you have in regards to the industry and being a black female rapper and what the public/industry needs to do in order to solve it. No one will take you seriously when you start crying and pointing fingers and saying the Grammy’s are unfair. Guess what? Life is unfair. Deal with it, and find ways to make it fair.
It’s not impossible for black women to make it. Look at Beyonce, look at Nicki Minaj…they worked hard and focused on their music. Maybe the reason Banks isn’t successful is due to her immaturity, lack of respect, and talent. Iggy Azalea isn’t the first woman Banks has feuded with, and she won’t be the last.
I have some serious advice for Azealia Banks:
Worry about yourself. Work hard and make good music instead of trying to get press. If your work is good, eventually the press (and later, fans) will follow. Your biggest mistake was hating on Iggy Azalea who has a bigger and stronger following. Instead of hating, do something about it. Appreciate how far women have come — black AND white — and let that motivate you to do better and be better. How about instead of spending all of your time in stupid feuds you work on your music?
