Last night I attended a private screening for Don Jon. Now, let me preface this by saying that all I really knew about Don Jon was that it was written & directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays a porn addict that bangs girls he describes as “dimes.” Little did I know I would enter a 90 minute porno. Note: do not watch Don Jon with someone you are not completely comfortable with, and definitely do not watch it with your parents (unless you watch porn with your parents, then that’s a different story and a little creepy).
Here’s a little summary from IMDB:
Jon Martello objectifies everything in his life: his apartment, his car, his family, his church, and, of course, women. His buddies even call him Don Jon because of his ability to pull “10s” every weekend without fail. Yet even the finest flings don’t compare to the transcendent bliss he achieves alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Dissatisfied, he embarks on a journey to find a more gratifying sex life, but ends up learning larger lessons of life and love through relationships with two very different women.
From start to finish (no pun intended), this movie will have you laughing ‘til you can’t breathe. JGL proves he is in indeed a triple threat — the writing, the direction & his acting were all amazing. The entire cast (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Tony Danza, Julianne Moore, & Brie Larson) was phenomenal. I have to admit, it was a bit weird for me to see Scar-Jo playing a New Jersey girl but she did a pretty good job. I was pleasantly surprised not just by Scar-Jo but also by Tony Danza who was almost unrecognizable. Julianne Moore never disappoints and I’m convinced she can read the phone book and still give a better performance than 90% of other actresses out there booking.
Ok, let’s get to the juice (wow, I’m clearly feeling very pun-y today). The film intertwines real porn videos with sex that JGL’s character, Jon, has with real women. It’s all about sex & at times it’s a lot to handle at once. So many fake tits & perfectly sculpted asses (including Scar-Jo’s) that I was relieved I came to watch the movie with 3 of my best girls and not a boyfriend or someone I was dating. Talk about uncomfortable.
Joking and sex aside, the underlying message of the film is a good one (I can’t reveal it without spoiling the movie). I’m gonna keep it real and say go out and see it, BUT make sure you see it with people you’re comfortable with & make sure you have someone to come home to at the end of the night if you know what I’m trying to say, because this movie will make you feel all sorts of things you didn’t know you could feel in a movie theatre.
Happy watching 😉 XO NM
