MORAvational Monday: Expectations

MORAvational Monday: Expectations

Throughout my life, I’ve been told I expect too much from people – that I expect them to do things for expectationsme just because I would do the same.

To put it simply:

I expect too much because I give too much.

Makes sense, right?

Unfortunately, when you expect too much, you end up disappointed. I don’t know about you, but this has been a huge battle for me. People almost never live up to my expectations, and that’s a problem.

Like normal human beings, we want to shield ourselves from being hurt as much as we can, but sometimes no matter how many times you bang your head against a wall, you’ll never learn.

Well, when you’re tired of hitting your head, what do you do?

I’m going to be honest and say I don’t really have the universal theory on this. Hopefully, y’all can help me out. For me, it’s been a learning process of figuring out when to give and when to not. It’s easy to bend over backwards for someone, but the real question is, would they do the same for you? Think about it, be honest with yourself, and if the answer is no, then do yourself a favor and don’t volunteer. I have a really hard time believing that some people just give selflessly without expecting absolutely anything in return. If I’m wrong, please holler at me and let a girl know!

By following that rule, you set yourself up for less disappointment. It’s not always easy to remember to take a step back if you’re someone who’s always used to going out of your way for people – I still fuck up  all the time – but once you start, you’ll find yourself being taken advantage of less and less. And thus, you’ll have more free time to focus on you and giving your time to people who actually deserve it!

The next time you offer to drive someone to the airport, or hook them up with one of your friends, or fix someone’s resume, remember this discussion we’re having on [typography font=”Cantarell” size=”15″ size_format=”px” color=”#ff6666″]Give Me Mora[/typography] . Sometimes it’s better to be selfish than selfless. And if you whole-heartedly believe you won’t be upset if they don’t return the favor for you, go ahead and do it by all means.

Chime in here, people! Tell me, what do YOU think? Do you expect too much because you give too much?
